Why onlyBMX?

Why this site? For a bit of fun I guess. My BMX days date back to the late 1970s when it was just starting to gain popularity. Still, it was considered a fad and not a real sport so the group of us at school were ridiculed on occasion. We soldiered on and I can still remember the holidays, especially over summer, where we would meet at the local bike shop about 9:30am and decide where we would go for the day. Sometimes it would be up to 10km away but we didn't care. Other days we just hung around near the shop. We would all then head home in time for dinner and after that I'd go off to the local school for another hour or so.

I never really took racing all that seriously. No 'official' training and I would ride to the local track on race days. Unfortunately my age group had a guy who was six feet tall at age 14 and very solid. He won many of the races, however, the rest of us would get a win in every now and then.

School, university and then work took over and I sold all my BMX stuff. However, I never really stopped thinking about it. I had a friend who made a comeback but I lost track of him soon after that.

Looking back now I realise how much fun I had because of BMX. I met lots of great people from all over the city that I might not have otherwise met. We all came from different suburbs and often different schools. I guess I was lucky that at the time we were all learning so it wasn't like I was a rookie trying to break into an established group of riders.

I remember one story from a few years back. I had a summer job detailing cars for a rental car company and was riding to work. I became aware of another rider behind me who looked like he was trying to catch up. I've never lost the competitive spirit and still don't like being overtaken so I just sped up. Eventually I had to stop at a red light and he pulled up next to me. Turns out it was a guy I used to race against and hadn't seen for a while. We had a bit of a chat and went our separate ways. This is the same person I always make of point of seeing when I go back home. I don't see any of my school friends now, but still try and see some of the BMX ones, albeit not to successfully.

Over the years I have read many articles about how sports have affected people. It always seems to me that those involved in the less mainstream sports seem to love them more and stay involved for longer. Skating, BMX and surfing are the ones that come to mind although surfing has been able to make the transition to mainstream whilst still keeping the 'indie' edge.

So that is why I decided to put the site together. Another reason is to have a play around with ideas that I'd like to incorporate into my other sites. Things like the photo rating script and amazon script, plus others I develop myself.

I hope you like it.
